Banastre Tarleton is a Revolutionary War British Colonel who was actually a demon in disguise.

Banastre was Ichabod Crane's commanding officer when he was stationed in the colonies. He proved to be a very brutal man, who despite Ichabod's warnings that his actions were turning the locals against them, he ordered multiple executions on flimsy charges and forced men to torture Arthur Bernard for information about Cicero. He tried to force Ichabod to do so as well, but Arthur and Katrina managed to convince Ichabod to switch sides. At the end of the flashback, it is revealed that Tarleton is a demon, most likely one of the Shadows Of Darkness, and kills Arthur Bernard. He then proceeds to attack Ichabod Crane, leaving him badly wounded. However. when more soliders started to emerge, Tarleton ran off.[1]
