Daniel Lancaster was a wealthy landowner in the 18th century, who hired The Pied Piper and killed him, and subsequently cursed all generations of his family.

Daniel is seen in flashbacks as the man who hired and killed The Pied Piper. In doing this, he cursed his family for generations to come, until the curse was broken by Ichabod and Abbie.
