"This is known as the Grand Grimoire, the volume of forbidden black magic."
Ichabod Crane to Abbie Mills[src]

The Grand Grimoire is an ancient artifact, once know to have been in the possession of John Dee, Queen Elizabeth I's spymaster. It was was lost over the ages, only to be rediscovered in the early 21st century and put up for auction in Sleepy Hollow, where interested parties stole it.

History[]

The Grand Grimoire was said to have been created by John Dee, "an Elizabethan-era academic, and famed student of the occult. He spent years compiling spells into books, this is known as the Grand Grimoire, the volume of forbidden black magic.... he was a scholar, he wanted to understand the power of the dark forces and keep it hidden away. The Grand Grimoire has been much sought after in magic circles," according to Katrina.[1]

In Sleepy Hollow, the Grand Grimoire is seen one of the artifacts that will be auctioned by the Claridge's Auction House. A warlock, Solomon Kent, recently escaped from Purgatory, kills the curators overseeing the preparations for the auction and steals the book. He tries to activate its powers, only to fail. Katrina explains, "It's not whole; John Dee bound the book with a spell so that no one could access any part of it unless the book was whole, to make sure the magic within it could not spread widely, but whoever handled the book must have split up the pages."

Team Witness discovered that the missing pages of the Grand Grimoire were headed to a regional air freight company, arriving at the Westchester distribution hub. The warlock, Kent, also traces the pages, and takes them after a confrontation with Katrina. She says with the complete Grimore in his hand, she cannot hope to defeat him. Kent flees to the Pocantico Grove during the Perigean tide, when the moon is closest to the Earth, and a witch's powers wax. They realize the spell he wants is not a resurrection spell but a time traveling spell. If he is successful, their whole reality would be changed.

In the fight with Kent, Team Witness prevented him from completing the time traveling spell, killing him in battle. Irving, upon dealing the finishing blow, secretly takes the Grand Grimoire. When asked by Crane and Abbie, about the book, Irving declares that the Grand Grimoire burned away with Solomon's body.[1]

The following morning, Irving meets with Henry Parish to whom he surrenders the Grand Grimoire. Using the Grimoire, Henrytried to preform the Awakening Ritual, but only a full blood could perform it successfully. Henry approached his mother, Katrina, about working with him. They planned to use the Grimoire to perform the ritual. Crane and Abbie manage to foil their plan, and Henry is killed.

An enraged Katrina then used the Traveler's Spell from the Grand Grimoire to travel back in time to make sure her husband dies on the battlefield, but Abbie manages to follow her back to 1781.[2] With Grace Dixon's help and understanding of the Abiero Spell, Abbie reversed the effect of Katrina's spell, as if it never happened and they return to the present.

Katrina, in a rage, tried to kill Abbie with the Grand Grimoire's curse, but Crane managed to knock the Grimoire out of Katrina's hand. When he and his wife then struggled for a blade, Katrina is accidentally and fatally wounded. After after, the Grimoire was locked deep in the Archives for safety.[3]

Alternate Future[]

Around 2030, in an alternate future where Malcolm Dreyfuss had conquered America, an older version of Crane had sent Lara Thomas to undo everything that happened from the moment that Diana had become the Horseman of War. He sent her to retrieve the Grand Grimoire, to cast the Traveler's Spell. After locating it in Malcolm's lair, where it was sent after everything in the Archives, she was able to cast the Traveler's Spell and, despite Malcolm's efforts to stop her, go back in time. After correcting the past, the alternate future ceased to exist.[4]

Content[]
