The Headless Horseman's Skull is the head of Abraham Van Brunt, cut off by former friend-turned-enemy Ichabod Crane during the Revolutionary War. It was subsequently taken by the Sisterhood of the Radiant Heart to prevent the Horseman of Death from regaining it and summoning the other three horsemen. It was hidden in the false grave of Katrina Crane until it was dug up over two-hundred years later in Sleepy Hollow.
History[]
After Ichabod Crane chopped off the Horseman's head, the severed head was buried in the "tomb" of Katrina Crane. Being a Horseman of the Apocalypse, Abraham Van Brunt was not truly dead, even after being decapitated. Upon his return, the Horseman endeavored to retrieve his head at any cost.
The head is invulnerable. When Ichabod and Abbie try to destroy the skull, they use every method they could think of, but they are all useless. Then, they use the skull as bait to lure the Horseman into their trap. Frank Irving later had the skull placed into a bank for safekeeping. In the second season, Ichabod and Abbie get the skull back from the bank in order to awaken the Kindred, a "Frankenstein's Monster" made by Benjamin Franklin for confronting Death.
With the destruction of the Kindred, the skull of the Horseman remained in one piece. Ichabod Crane was later able to locate the head and use it to summon the Horseman from Pandora's Box. As the Horseman attempted to use the skull's power to kill Pandora, it was swallowed by the box and the box eventually exploded with Pandora's death.
Trivia[]
- According to what was said, the skull is somehow devoid of any signs of life, no DNA markers of any sort.[1]
- Because of the events in the second season, Abraham's skull was in the possession of the Kindred, who needed a piece of the horseman to become a possible rival and harbinger of the Four Horsemen's demise.[2]
- With the destruction of the Kindred in season three, the skull of Abraham Van Brunt remained in one piece. Ichabod Crane was later able to locate the head and use it to summon the Horseman from Pandora's Box.
- As Abraham Van Brunt attempted to use the skull's power to kill Pandora, it was swallowed by the box and the box eventually exploded with Pandora's death. The skull's condition currently remains unknown.
