Rutledge was the head of Freemasons in Sleepy Hollow. He was responsible for capturing Ichabod Crane in order to make sure he wasn't a demon. He was later killed by the Headless Horseman trying to find his skull.

Season One[]
Rutledge had the Freemasons capture Ichabod Crane while he was visiting his wife Katrina Crane's grave. The Freemasons made Crane validate his story in order to make sure he was not a demon in disguise. The Freemasons later had The Sin Eater separate the bond between Ichabod and the Horseman.[1]
He and the other Freemasons were killed by the Headless Horseman, who then hung their heads from a tower as Paul Revere-style lanterns.[2]
